During her visits, she often reflects on the island’s past as the whaling capital of the world. Though much has changed, the damp, salty air remains—a sensory link to her own childhood spent crossing oceans. On this 14-mile stretch of land, the ocean is ever-present, and it’s that deep, constant connection to the sea that continues to draw her back—and what made her fall in love with the island in the first place
