STORY + DESCRIPTION
These intricately woven Tenganan Placemats are the perfect tabletop accessory for adding a traveled sophistication to your place settings. The rectangular shape is contemporary and the weave gives organic texture and warmth to your tablescape.
Handwoven in the village of Tenganan, Bali, these placemats are crafted from natural Ata reed, a fast-growing vine known for its strength and durability. The process begins by carefully splitting the reed into fine strands, which are then intricately woven by skilled artisans—a single piece can take up to a month to complete. Once woven, each basket is boiled and sun-dried for several days before being gently smoked over coconut husks. This final step strengthens the fibers, enhances their warm, golden hue, and adds a subtle, earthy scent. The result is a beautifully crafted piece that reflects generations of tradition, patience, and artistry.
